Mathematics Curriculum Intent
At Harcourt Primary School, we believe that mathematics is essential to everyday life and future success. Our curriculum, built around the White Rose Maths scheme, is designed to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent, and resilient mathematician. We aim to provide a high-quality maths education that develops fluency in number facts and calculation strategies, encourages children to reason mathematically and explain their thinking, equips pupils to solve problems in a variety of contexts, and builds a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through a carefully sequenced, small-steps approach. We also promote a positive attitude towards maths and foster a belief that everyone can succeed.
Implementation
We follow the White Rose Maths long-term plan to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum. Every child is supported to access the curriculum through thoughtful adaptation, targeted support, and appropriate challenge. Lessons incorporate a Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach to strengthen conceptual understanding, and children engage in daily fluency practice to improve mental maths and recall. Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught to enhance reasoning and communication, and teachers use end of unit assessments to identify gaps and provide targeted support.
Impact
By the end of each key stage, children will have a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and be able to apply their knowledge confidently in real-life situations. They will demonstrate resilience and independence when tackling mathematical challenges and be well-prepared for the next stage of their learning journey.
